Read the review on that one and think about whether that sounds like your cup of tea before playing it. At that point, you’ll be pretty experienced in the genre and can try just about anything you want.Įxcept La-Mulana. If you are ready for a challenge, you can try Environmental Station Alpha or go back to Hollow Knight. If after that, you are still looking for easier games, try the Guacamelee or Shantae series. The Alchemist’s Castle is an indie MV that you can beat in two hours. I’d play that one early on before trying some of the more “obscure” ones. Dust: An Elysian Tail is another good one that’s a little on the linear side for my tastes but is still a decent game and not too difficult. That can help you explore when you’re starting out.

Both those games use a map that tells you whether there is a collectible in a particular room. Super Metroid and Shadow Complex would be a couple good places to start. If I didn’t want to explore, get lost, backtrack, figure out which way to go next, and be surprised when I do find where to go next, I would be playing more linear games instead. To me, the joy of Metroidvanias is exploring them without guidance and finding as much as you can on your own. Would really also like to know any good beginner metroidvanias (pref free) if that is a thing or if I’m already where I should be. Probably a dumb question but maybe it will spark some conversations. Do you guys watch videos and look up guides or just go for it and hope it works out? Because looking at speed runs these guys know so many tricks I’m wondering how someone knew can go about getting to that level.

I feel that I am mechanically inclined enough to play these games but I’m confused as to how to “properly” learn everything about them. I downloaded An untitled Story by Mattmakesgames and AM2R (another Metroid 2 remake). The second was Hollow Knight that I just picked up and sunk 30 hours in it so far but it is so damn hard and even with looking up guides I am not able to beat the watcher knights because I don’t think I have enough health and am frustrated enough with the game I’m giving it a bit of a break. First one I played was Ori and the blind forest which I enjoyed and found it pretty easy (still had to look up a guide to find health). I just started playing this genre of games.
